Creative use of Decorative Tiles can make a fabulous kitchen
makeover
at relatively little cost
It's well known that a kitchen makeover can be one of the priciest home
improvement projects you can tackle. Well, here's one great way for you
to give your kitchen a stunning face lift that will last for
generations – yes, generations – and not max out
your credit card or bank account.
Your kitchen counter tops are one of the most highly visible elements
of your kitchen decor. If your counter tops have seen better days, or
you're just sick and tired of looking at them, consider replacing those
unsightly or boring counter tops with tile. We're not talking extreme
square footage, as you might face with a complete bathroom tile job. As
you may have noticed in home decorating magazines or at your home
improvement center, there are some absolutely, drop-dead gorgeous
decorative tiles for sale. Our kitchen makeover idea doesn't entail
using decorative tiles exclusively. If you were to do so, that could
run into some money. We're talking about the judicious use of some of
those lovely hand painted decorative tiles, interspersed with a single
color tile which predominates.
There are several ways to make impressive patterns that integrate well
into the scheme. One popular technique is creating a back splash of
decorative tiles, then using a single color for the remainder of the
counter top. You can also form geometric patterns which cross, or
random, but aesthetically pleasing placements dotting the counter top.
Your home improvement store can provide many other creative ideas for
using decorative tiles. Check out some tile websites as well, for even
more ideas.
Some of the loveliest decorative tiles (just my opinion!) are the hand
painted Italian tiles, with bright hues of blues and yellows and
accents of red in an ornate pattern of flowers and such. Earth tones
and vines of olive greens are also lovely. There are so many designs to
choose from, you won't want to make a hasty decision. Buy a few of your
favorites to take home and look at for a while. Once you've found the
decorative tile design you absolutely love, look for your solid color
tile which will fit in well with the other colors. That part is
relatively easy. Grout is available in many colors to enhance your
counter top's appearance.
When you're ready to remove the current counter top, be sure you
install a reinforcing substructure which will support the weight of the
tiles. Your home center can advise you on special tile cutting tools
and any other doodads you'll need.
When your makeover is complete, you may never want to move! However,
you may decide to repaint the kitchen. The icing on the whole project.
